The Design Plan

Its time to begin planning for your short film.

You should create your plan in an A4 blank folio over the course of 4 weeks. What follows is a week by week plan for the 4 sections in your folio:

Week 1
Auteur Inspiration

Pick an auteur that you really love. It doesn't have to be the auteur you did your presentation on.

Tell me what you love about this auteur. Break down each of their major films and tell me what inspired you about their filmography? Is it the characters? genre? styles? film techniques? storytelling?
LENGTH - 2 pages

Example using Greta Gerwig

Week 2
Auteur Techniques

Pick 3 techniques that your auteur was known for using. These could be camera techniques, editing techniques, composition, colour, themes, storylines, tropes, fonts, music, etc.
Tell me: Why you chose each technique? How you plan to implement each one? You can not only WRITE but DRAW how you plan to implement each technique
LENGTH - 2 pages

Example using Tarantino

Week 3 - Script

Its time to write your script for your short film. You film should run for 3-5 minutes (so VERY short!). It can be about anything you like. However, It must be in the style of your chosen auteur. Make sure you follow proper script formatting.

Week 4 - Storyboard

Finally it's time to visually map out your film. A storyboard is like a comic book version of your script, where we see every shot visually represented in a cell/comic like structure. here is a great template:
Each cell should include Shot Types:
  • Extreme Close Up (ECU)
  • Close Up (CU)
  • Mid Shot (MS)
  • Long Shot (LS)
  • Extreme Long Shot (ELS)
Camera Movement such as:
  • dolly/tracking shots
  • pans
  • tilts
  • zooms
  • zollys
Camera Angles such as:
  • birds eyes
  • worms eyes
  • low angles
  • high angles
  • dutch angles
