The Design Plan

Its time to begin planning for your short film.

You should create your plan in an A4 blank folio over the course of 4 weeks. What follows is a week by week plan for the 4 sections in your folio:

Week 1 - Inspiration

Tell me why you love film. Start with your favourite movies. your favourite genres? your favourite directors? why do you like them? Be visual. use pictures to help illustrate your passion for film.
LENGTH - 2 pages

Week 2 - Conventions

From your auteur notes, pick 3 conventions (a different auteur for each one) that you will use. Tell me: Why you chose each convention. How you plan to implement each one. You can not only WRITE but DRAW how you plan to implement each convention
LENGTH - 2 pages

Week 3 - Script

Its time to write your script for your short film. You film should run for 3-5 minutes (so VERY short!). It can be about anything you like. make sure you follow proper script formatting. See below:

Week 4 - Storyboard

finally its time to visually map out your film. A storyboard is like a comic book version of your script, where we see every shot visually represented in a cell/comic like structure. here is a great template:
Each cell should include Shot Types:
  • Extreme Close Up (ECU)
  • Close Up (CU)
  • Mid Shot (MS)
  • Long Shot (LS)
  • Extreme Long Shot (ELS)
Camera Movement such as:
  • dolly/tracking shots
  • pans
  • tilts
  • zooms
  • zollys
Camera Angles such as:
  • birds eyes
  • worms eyes
  • low angles
  • high angles
  • dutch angles
