- You will need to practise identifying representations in the media, including how those constructions are built via codes, selection and omission.
Consider the photo of Kendrick Lamar on the cover of Forbes financial magazine. What is the representation of Kendrick? What codes are building this convention? consider mise-en-scene, visual composition, colour, acting, lighting, etc. What has been selected and omitted from the representation? Consider the clothing Kendrick is wearing. What are the denotive and connotative meanings of his wardrobe? |
Section B - Audiences
- You will need to know all your basic definitions. What is a target audience? What is market positioning? what are the 5 strategies for market positioning? what constitutes audience demographic, geographic, psychographic and behaviours?
- You will need to practise identifying target audiences for advertising according to demographics, psychographics, geographics and behaviours.
Section C - Australian Stories
- You will need to have a strong knowledge of the history of the moving image in Australia. refer back to your Australian Stories presentation or this website for revision - https://aso.gov.au/chronology/1890s/
- You will need to be able to outline (with examples) the limitations of the Australian film industry
- You will need to be able to highlight differing representations of Australia and Australian characters in film, television or advertising - and how each representation is built via codes belonging to its medium.

Section A - Narrative, Style and Genre
- You will need to know the difference between film-making codes (such as camera, lighting, sound etc) and narrative conventions.
- You will need to be able to define and confidently talk about narrative conventions such as point of view, storyline, structure of time, character development and cause & effect.
- You will need to be able to give an example of 3 act narrative structure in the film - Joker, OR a film narrative of your own choosing.
- You will need to be able to give an example of a film genre, its conventions, and audience engagement and consumption habits.
What is the difference between a cinematic code and and narrative convention? Provide examples to help strengthen your explanation.
Give a definition for the narrative convention - 'cause and effect'. Provide an example of cause and effect in a film narrative. Outline the 3 act structure of Joker, or a film narrative of your own choosing. Ensure your outline makes reference to macguffins, exposition, inciting incidents, plot and pinch points. What typically defines the 3 acts in narrative 3 act structure? Where does the term 'genre' originate from? Can you list 10 differing types of film genre? Choose one film genre and explain how that genre is defined by the use of both cinematic and storyline tropes. Analyse how audiences typically engage with and consume your chosen genre. |

- You will need to know the history of mass media communication including the 3 major eras and the technology that defined them.
- You will need to be able to explain how new media technologies have the ability to disrupt traditional media technologies and processes. Think about the changes to journalism caused by smartphones - or changes to television caused by streaming. You will need to refer to a case study example.
- You will need to be able to confidently discuss social, ethical and legal issues in emergent technologies and social media
- You will need to be able to give examples of humane technology
Explain how each era of mass media communication was defined by a new technological development.
Give examples of technologies that belonged of each era. Explain how new media technologies have the potential to disrupt tradition media technologies and processes. Give a detailed case study example. What is an emergent technology that has the potential to disrupt an established process, industry or method? What are the current limitations of the technology? What is a current social issue related to emergent technology in Australia? What is a current ethical issue related to the use of social media in Australia? What is humane technology? Can you give 2 examples of 2 differing types of humane technology? |
