Time to test your skills...
Pre-Production Experiments – worth 10 marks
In Term 2, You will need to undertake 2 experiments. The exercises can explore a technical or aesthetic challenge that you intend to overcome, or can be skill based experiments that test your ability to create something challenging (for example, if you intend to include time-lapse or drone footage in your film, how do you do it and make it look fantastic?)
Aesthetics
This is a task that demonstrates what you would like your project to ‘look’ like. For example – if you were shooting fashion photography in a graffiti laneway, what colours are going to work well with a bright, vivid background? OR, how might you frame your subject matter in order to sell the clothing?
Technical
This is a task that tackles a technical challenge faced by you. For example – if you were shooting fashion photography in a graffiti laneway, what aperture setting and shutter speed is going to give you the best results if you intend to capture bright colours and fast movement? OR, what filters might you place over the lens if you intend for a darker, grungier feel?
For each task you need to provide the following;
[EXAMPLE]
Harper Leonard (class of ‘15)
Intention:
The intention of my first production exercise is to compare the effectiveness of particularly colour combinations and schemes, in establishing the light, fabricated mood representing the external façade of emotion, versus a colour combination that creates the dark, sinister mood of the internal emotional reality. I would also like to input another colour scheme to the outro of the song, one which conveys an uplifting feeling, one with that builds with anticipation. I intend to do research into particular films and work out which colours they use to convey a sense of darkness or conversely a sense of light fabrication. I will compose a number of colour combinations to run up against the colour white, which will be the base colour of my music video (white, minimalistic room), to see which colour perfectly represents these particular moods and feelings. The colours I choose will be the colours I assign to the artist/actor in my video, which they will then use to paint onto a canvas and symbolically will represent the underlying moods and meanings of the song. I intend to choose the colour combinations through a simple test with fellow students in which I will show them each colour combination and they will say the first emotion that comes to mind. Tallying, the results of the simple test I will group similar emotions together to ultimately come up with two sets of colours, one to symbolise the external façade of the verse and one to symbolise the internal reality of the chorus. The colour combinations will perfectly encapsulate the meaning and mood of the song for maximum effect.
*Please note that the title of each colour combination wasn’t specified previously when the test took place to avoid an unfair experiment.

For each task you need to provide the following;
- Your Intention - A Statement of Intention that describes the purpose of the exercise: aesthetics and/or structural capacities and/or characteristics of a media product to be explored; technical equipment to be operated; applications used and/or media processes to be applied to develop particular skills to present specific ideas to achieve particular effects and/or explore aesthetic qualities.
- Your Evaluation - An explanation of how the completed exercise realises the stated intention/s of the exercise. The explanation should outline the extent to which the intention/s were realised.

Evaluation:
Based on the results of the colour scheme test in which I recorded the emotional reactions of 7 students, through one immediate word expressing emotion, there are clear colour combinations which convey the particular moods I intend to achieve in my music video. The results clearly separated the colours into the 3 different moods and emotions required for the verse, chorus and outro, with one of the colour combinations in each group ultimately reflecting the most answers required for the moods I want to convey. The strong, bright colours of green, blue orange and as well as green, blue and yellow had an overall positive impression on the participants with all 7 of them reflecting calm and happy emotions. The deciding factor between the two colour combinations were the tranquil and calm words that 4 of the 7 participants used to describe the blue, green and yellow colour combination compared to the feelings of just happiness that the blue, green and orange reflected. The deep, dark, angry and depressing colours of the 5 ‘internal reality’ options, reflected those exact emotions from each of the 7 participants, with 5 of the 7 participants responding to the purple, blue and black colour combination with the desired emotions of ‘misery,’ ‘depression’ and ‘fear. Finally for the outro of the song, there were two colour schemes that reflected emotions of contemplation and upliftment and also some feelings of peace, with 3 and 1 participants reflecting those emotions respectively. The light blue, light green and dark blue colour combination was the most effective in exposing these feelings directly with 4 of the 7 participants showing these emotions. The resulting colour combinations I will be using in my music video to convey the emotions of happiness and tranquillity in the verse, fear and depression in the chorus and upliftment in the outro are blue, green and yellow; purple, deep blue and black; and light blue, light green and dark blue.
