UNIT 3/4 MEDIA
PENINSULA GRAMMAR
"I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can't stop eating peanuts" Orson Welles 12/10/1956
VCE Media Units 3&4 are an opportunity for students to refine their media production skills and develop a greater understanding of the mass media. In Unit 3, students develop the plan for their media production, experiment with media production technology, explore how films are constructed via cinematic codes and conventions and explore how media texts reflect the views and values of society. In Unit 4, students touch on issues surrounding media influence and control while creating their major media product.
Technology:
In terms of technology, the media department is fully equipped with cameras, lighting equipment, sound recording equipment, camera movement systems including dolly tracks, gimbals and jib arms which the students will be trained how to use.
We also have an Apple iMac editing lab for those students that don’t have editing software/hardware at home. Plus the school provides a licence to the Adobe creative suite for editing via Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Illustrator, Photoshop, Animate and After Effects
Pathways:
The study of Media leads to pathways for further theoretical and/or practical study at tertiary level or in vocational education and training settings; including:

UNIT 3 - MEDIA NARRATIVES AND PRE-PRODUCTION
Narrative and Ideology. In VCE Media, the study of narrative involves an examination of how narratives are organised, structured and engage audiences. You will study two films (American Beauty and Get Out) in detail and write about how directors use a range of techniques - including camera techniques, acting, mise en scene, editing, lighting and sound - to tell a story and engage the audience. They also look at how the values and ideologies of a society influence the creation of media products.
Media production development. In Unit 3 Media, students will continue to develop the skills required to make a media product. When preparing to make their major project for the year, students will complete two production experiments exploring the equipment and processes they will need to make their product.
Media production design. In Unit 3 Media, students will create a plan for a media product of their choice. Students may choose from:

Media production. After they have completed their production design plan, students will embark on the production of their media product. Principal photography for this project typically occurs during the mid-year holidays. A finished version of the media product is submitted early in Unit 4 for feedback .Students have a further week to make refinements and changes to their project before it is submitted for assessment. It is expected that most of the work for this task will be completed outside of class.

Agency and Control in and of the Media. The relationship between the media and audiences has never been more complex. The contemporary media landscape poses issues and challenges for the way that academics and commentators have traditionally theorised the nature of communication. The media has always been considered to have the capacity to influence, but now the balance of power is shifting and arguments around who influences who have become highly contested. The media and its audiences are now both thought to exercise agency; the capacity to act and exert power. Students will analyse the changing nature of media influence and question who really holds the power in a modern media landscape? During their study of Agency and Control, students will consider how the media influences audiences and how audiences have agency over the media. Students will look at how the relationship between media and audiences has changed over time, issues with media regulation and legal and ethical issues in the media.
