Video Essay #2

Picture

Your second video essay must look at the role Ideology plays in either American Beauty or Get Out. Pick one of the films and construct a short 2-3 minute video essay that addresses on the following questions:

American Beauty
American Beauty reflects on two explicit Western ideologies. 'The American Dream' and 'The Pursuit of Happiness'. What is the film trying to say about these two particular ideologies? In your video essay refer to specific codes and conventions.

Get Out
Get Out both satirises and subverts explicit and Implicit Ideologies. It pokes fun at dominant progressive white liberal attitudes and also racist ideologies such as Colonialism and White Supremacy. What is the film trying to achieve by doing this? In your video essay refer to specific codes and conventions.

Before you start, do some research… watch videos, read articles and form your own informed opinion.
Use footage from either American Beauty or Get Out to help illustrate your point. Your discussion may or may not touch on codes and conventions. That is up to you. But your aim should be to address the question posed above.
Here is a great article on ideology in Get Out and here is one for American Beauty
